M77s or Hawk Pilot Boots review – find the best fit for you
Share
Both are made by Samelin in Tartu, Estonia. Both are NATO-certified. Both are worn by armed forces across Northern Europe. The question is which one suits how you actually use a boot.
The M77 — the original field boot
The M77 has been standard issue for the Norwegian Army for over 40 years. It is a heavy, stiff, full-grain leather boot built to handle prolonged field conditions — cold, wet, rough terrain, extended wear. It asks something of you in return: a break-in period. The thick leather and sole take time to soften and shape to your foot. Once they do, they outlast most footwear you'll ever own.
- 2.8–3 mm natural leather upper
- Cambrelle lining — breathable and moisture-wicking
- Direct-injected PU sole
- Lace-up only
- EU 36–48
The Hawk Pilot — practical upgrades, same foundation
The Hawk Pilot Boots are built on the same Samelin foundation as the M77 but with two practical additions: a waterproof inner-side zipper and a lace-lock system. You set the laces once and use the zipper to get the boots on and off. The leather is slightly thinner (2.2–2.4 mm vs 2.8–3 mm), which makes them lighter and less stiff from day one. Worn by the German, Norwegian, Estonian, and Finnish armed forces.
- 2.2–2.4 mm full-grain water-repellent leather
- Cambrelle lining (tongue)
- Direct-injected PU sole
- Waterproof side zipper + lace-lock system
- EU 36–51

Which one to choose
Get the M77 if: you want the classic field boot, you don't mind the break-in, and you need maximum durability for demanding outdoor or cold-weather use.
Get the Hawk Pilot if: you want the same build quality with less friction — a boot you can get on and off quickly, that feels comfortable sooner, and that works as well on city streets as it does outdoors. Also the better choice if you need sizes above EU 48.
